Project Case: Guangzhou Sunac Snow World — 75,000 m², 5 Trails, 3,000 Visitors at Once

This is the big one. When people ask "can you really build a serious ski resort inside a shopping mall in southern China," this is the answer.

Guangzhou Sunac Snow World — branded as "Hot Snow Miracle" — is not a novelty snow corner. At 75,000 m² with five graded pistes and a 3,000-person simultaneous capacity, it ranks among the largest indoor snow facilities ever built anywhere.

The Trail Setup

Five pistes serve the full ability spectrum:
  • Zero-base snowboard practice track
  • Double-board practice track
  • Primary track
  • Intermediate track
  • Advanced track
The primary track and double-board practice track connect through a central buffer zone to form a continuous 460-meter indoor alpine run — longer than many outdoor beginner trails at mountain resorts. The intermediate and advanced trails feature the world's first dual three-dimensional cross-piste design, where trails intersect at different elevations to create varied terrain that changes throughout the run.

The Snow Entertainment Zone

Not everyone comes to ski. The entertainment zone covers Frozen Planet and polar bear exhibit areas, plus a lineup of snow activities: flying saucers on snow, simulated glacier flights, ice bikes, and ice bumper cars. The mix is designed so families with non-skiers still spend a full day inside — the entertainment zone drives ticket sales from the people who would never buy a ski pass.

Cooling 75,000 m² to -6°C in Guangzhou

This is where it gets real. Guangzhou's climate is subtropical monsoon — summer peaks above 35°C with 80%+ humidity. Maintaining a 75,000 m² space at -4°C to -6°C, 365 days a year, with 3,000 warm bodies cycling through airlocks every few hours, is an engineering project on a completely different scale from a 2,000 m² snow play zone.

The refrigeration load numbers on a project this size are measured in megawatts, not kilowatts. The snowmaking system has to cover five separate trail zones plus entertainment areas, with continuous snow production to compensate for melt, compression, and wear. The air handling and dehumidification system has to prevent fog formation, frost buildup on ceilings, and ice patches on walkways — all while the cold zone interfaces with a warm-side mall that sits right next door at 25°C.

YSSnow supplied the snowmaking system. In a facility where snow quality directly drives guest satisfaction, repeat visits, and safety, getting the snow right matters as much as getting the chiller right.

Why This Project Is the Ultimate Reference

If you are a developer anywhere in the world considering a large-scale indoor snow project, Guangzhou Sunac Snow World is the project you should study. It proves that:
  • Sub-tropical climate is not a barrier to world-class indoor snow
  • 3,000-visitor simultaneous capacity is operationally achievable
  • Five-trail setups with advanced terrain work indoors
  • The integrated resort model (ski + snow play + dining + retail) drives per-capita spend beyond ski ticket revenue
Five years of continuous operation since 2020, in one of the hottest and most humid major cities on the planet. That is the track record.
