Project Case: Yantai Ice & Snow Laboratory — 200 m² Precision Snow Research Facility

Not every snow project is about entertainment. When researchers need exactly the right snow — consistent, repeatable, made from tap water — the engineering requirements change completely.

This laboratory packs three independent subsystems into a compact 200 m² controlled environment:

Refrigeration Snow Making System — Automated production of snow using pure tap water, simulating natural snow crystal formation. No chemical additives. The system replicates the way real snow forms in nature, producing test-grade material with consistent density, grain size, and moisture content.

Snow Feeding System — Precise distribution and layering of snow onto the test surface. For a research lab, uniformity matters more than speed. The feeding system delivers controlled snow depth across the entire test bed, ensuring repeatable conditions for each experiment run.

Ski Friction System — This is the measurement end. The system tests ski-snow friction coefficients under controlled temperature and snow conditions. It is the kind of equipment that ski manufacturers, wax developers, and sports science institutes use to quantify what athletes feel on the slope.

Why This Project Is Different

A 200 m² snow lab is a different animal from a 5,000 m² snow park. The commercial snow park needs visual impact and guest throughput. The lab needs temperature stability within tight tolerances, snow consistency from batch to batch, and reliable data repeatability. Everything — chiller sizing, airflow design, snow making cycle control — is dialed in for precision, not spectacle.

YSSnow delivered all three subsystems as an integrated package, handling the design, equipment supply, and on-site commissioning. The fact that the whole system runs on tap water is worth noting — it eliminates the logistics and cost of sourcing purified or treated water, which matters for labs that want to run frequent test cycles without operational overhead.

Who Needs This

Universities with winter sports research programs, ski equipment manufacturers running product testing, national sports institutes looking to build indoor training analysis facilities — the market for precision snow labs is small but high-value. If you have a specific snow condition you need to create and control, on demand, year-round, this is what the engineering looks like.
